Bio

Dylan Fitzhenry on stage during a concert

Dylan Fitzhenry is a student in Music Composition at the University of British Columbia in the second year of his Master’s degree, and acting as Composer-In-Residence with the UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He is currently studying composition with T. Patrick Carrabré, Dorothy Chang, and Jennifer Butler. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in composition from the University of Manitoba in the spring of 2025, where he studied with Gordon Fitzell, Örjan Sandred, and David Litke.

 

As a student and musician, Dylan always aims to collaborate with his fellow students to create art, participating as a performer by playing tuba in ensemble such as the University of British Columbia Symphonic Wind Ensemble, as well as composing original music for his fellow students, working with them to prepare for performances, and collaborating with visual artists, philosophy students, and sound engineers on interdisciplinary projects.

 

As a composer outside of the academic environment, Dylan has been active across Canada, with past chamber collaborations including Sea Gate Reborn for Winnipeg’s 2024 Cluster Festival, Portals for Winnipeg’s new 2025 Contemporary Music Interactive concert series, Night Drags By premiered by Vancouver’s esteemed Standing Wave Ensemble, and winning the Dr. Michael Matthews Prize in Composition for Puzzlebox Suite, as well as large-ensemble collaborations including composing a new work for the University of Manitoba Wind Ensemble’s 2025 concert series, travelling to the Midwest Band and Orchestra Conference as a member of the Prairie Composer’s Collective, and his current position as Composer-In-Residence with the University of British Columbia Symphonic Wind Ensemble which has included the recent premiere of The Rusted Jungle and The Thirteenth Hour.

The Rusted Jungle

Composing music from the ground up can often feel like a monumental juggling act of planning, writing, and construction. This piece is written as series of variations on two contrasting themes. One theme is a melody of my own creation, lightly inspired by the Gregorian Dies Irae (for no particular reason).
